Installing the OpenVPN Client on Windows

The OpenVPN project provides an installer for Windows 2000 through Windows 10, downloadable from The Open- VPN Community Downloads Page. Alternately, use OpenVPN Client Export Package to create an installer bundled with an appropriate configuration file.

The installation is straightforward, accept all the defaults. The installation will create a new Local Area Connection on the client system for the OpenVPN TAP adapter. This interface will appear connected when the VPN is established and will otherwise show as disconnected. No configuration of this interface is necessary as its configuration will be pulled from the OpenVPN server or client configuration.

Current stable versions of the OpenVPN client for Windows utilize a system service so the GUI can run without elevated privileges. Once installed, a user does not need administrative access to run the client.
